Spotlight on the 11" rebolo: the heartbeat of Pagode

Among the highlights of this shipment are the new 11'' rebolos - a size that’s making waves in Rio de Janeiro as the new go-to for Pagode ensembles. The rebolos we just received measure 11'' in diameter and 55 cm in height, feature a conical design and a natural hide head. We have 6 standard colours in our shop that may occasionally change, from the Linha Brasil to the metallic Selfie tones and also some funky colours like orange, greens, turquoise and a sleek stylish black.

Why is the 11" rebolo so special?

The 11" rebolo has likely gained popularity because it strikes the perfect balance: delivering enough bass to carry the heartbeat of Pagode while offering a distinct contrast to the tan tan, all in a compact, handy size. It is, of course, the heart and soul of every Pagode. This small bass drum, often paired with the larger, lower-tuned tan tan, creates the rhythmic foundation that keeps the groove alive. But the rebolo isn’t just limited to Pagode. Its versatility makes it perfect for everything from casual jam sessions to professional Samba de Mesa performances.

The natural hide head adds an authentic Brazilian touch, delivering a warm, deep bass that’s hard to replicate with synthetic skins. While natural skins demand a bit more finesse to play, the payoff is worth it: an unmistakably rich, organic tone that’s a favorite among Brazilian musicians.

A little about GOPE: tradition meets innovation

GOPE is a family-run company with over 50 years of tradition in crafting percussion instruments. The company started in São Paulo, initially producing drum sets before focusing on Samba instruments in 1962 under the direction of Humberto Rodella, the founder’s son. Over the years, GOPE expanded and relocated to a large production facility in Embu Guaçu, where they now manufacture a wide range of percussion instruments, from agogôs to zabumbas. GOPE has always maintained close relationships with sambistas and musicians, incorporating their feedback into the development and refinement of its instruments.

Gope uses thinner steel sheet which saves some weight and makes the instrument perfect for parades and outdoor gigs where you wear the timbal on a strap. Naturally it will weigh a bit more than a timba with less hardware but full sound and a smart look totally make up for that!Timbaleiro trend from Salvador da Bahia: timbals with 16 tension hooks can be pitched up really high! The hooks spread the pression equally on the shell of the drum, like this your shell will not suffer any damage, even with the highest tuning. Nice, deep bass sound and crispy slaps are a nice to have with aluminium instruments, the whole sound has the typical sharp note. Aluminium instruments are pretty easy to maintain, weather doesn't harm them much and they are robust. The seam of the body is welded. Welded shells produce a higher and more audible part of shell sound due to more constant vibration. The hardware matches the color of the shell, as is the comfort rim. Keep in mind - more hardware means more weight!
