Artisan shekeré  (agbê, xequeré) hand-crafted from a naturally grown gourd, colourful individual designs - each piece unique!

This stunning shekeré, also known as agbê or xequeré, is an artisan creation by Biano Pajeú, a master craftsman from Olinda. For decades, Biano has been crafting shekerés in a variety of vibrant colors and shapes, transforming each one into a true work of art.

Shekerés are versatile instruments found in an array of music styles, from the traditional rhythms of Maracatú to modern and experimental ensembles that celebrate the diversity of world percussion. Their sharp, rhythm-defining sound makes them a perfect complement to dance and choreography. This shekeré is a handmade artisan product, the colour combination of the beads make this xequeré a unique piece.

This handcrafted shekeré features a unique design, with bead patterns that make every piece one of a kind. Only the finest gourds—well-grown, evenly sturdy, and visually appealing—are selected to become shekerés. A loosely braided net of beads is woven around the hollowed gourd, creating the instrument’s distinctive look and sound. The larger the gourd, the louder the tone, as more beads interact with its surface.

Bottle gourds are cultivated in specific climates where they must be carefully turned daily for months to prevent pressure marks and ensure their round shape. After harvesting, only a small number of gourds meet the high standards required for crafting a shekeré. Once hollowed, cleaned, and polished, the gourd reveals its beautiful, natural grain and smooth texture.

Playing the shekeré offers endless possibilities. Beyond the familiar bead sound, you can produce resonant bass tones by tapping the bottom of the gourd with a flat hand in counter movements. Whether used as a timekeeper or as a striking visual or sound effect element, the xequeré is a dynamic addition to any musical setting!

Biano Pajeú

His first contact with the agbê (- the name for a xequeré in Pernambuco), Biano Pajeú had back in 2002 when he met a percussion group which played Maracatu in Recife. He joined the group as a student and a teacher for playing and dancing with the xequeré. However, he was dissatisfied with the quality of the agbês, so he began his very own project in search of the ideal instrument. His efforts reach back to the year he first got in touch with this instrument. Biano is a musician himself and has a strong connection to his music and shekerés in particular, which helps him understand the needs of other shekeré players. His curiosity has opened doors to many new techniques which has led to his agbês being a lot more than just an instrument. For a while, life took him on different paths and he stopped his instrument making. By the end of 2017, he finally decided to quit his job and dedicate himself exclusively to what he most felt passionate about. "In the end, you only have one life" he says about his decision. Since 2018 he teaches playing and dancing with the xequeré.
