22'' surdo with short shell and crisp bass! This surdo axé with 40cm aluminium shell from Timbra is a short and light surdo made of medium- thickness aluminium with a powerful sound. Timbra is a show brand that builds Samba instruments for both stage performances and blocos, combining sturdy components, well designed hardware and a powerful sound. This model was specially developed for Kalango as it is a lighter version of the stage model with less hardware. It is perfect for use in blocos. Strong sound and solid construction, good and sturdy head supports on the shell rims and classic hardware with a fairly light weight.
The short shell has its origins in Bahia, where surdos are traditionally used for dancing a lot of choreographies and where they are even played high above the head. A shorter shell saves weight and is easier to handle. The short shell also means that the sustain is shorter (= dry sound), which is exactly what you should be looking for in Bahia styles.

In 2010, IZZO managed to pull off a remarkable milestone by lancing their high-end show brand TIMBRA TOP PERCUSSION.
All TIMBRA Samba instruments have been developed in close cooperation with renowned percussionists. The objective was to create convincing series of instruments with great sound, optically outstanding and adecuate for stage gigs. Especially the timbals, made of either wood or aluminium, set new standards with their 16 tuning hooks, extraordinary design and spectacular sound.
TIMBRA builds all kinds of Samba instruments from wood and aluminium surdos, cuicas, rebolos to tantans and timbals. A special eye-catcher was one of the brand's first lines - the Carlinhos Brown Signature Series with timbals and bacurinhas with elaborate colour prints and designs on vinyls. High-quality workmanship, authentic sounds and flashy designs are still the main trademarks of TIMBRA.
