Surdo - product guide

40cm, 50 cm or 60 cm high?

Short surdos are also called Surdo Axé or Surdo Bahia. The name already tells us that those drums come from Brazil´s Northeastern Samba Reggae. Nowadays, more and more of the shorter, about 50 cm high surdos are also being played in Rio´s Samba schools. Your choice should depend on the sound of the instrument, the weight and the wearing comfort.

Sound

The height of the body has an effect on the fading sound of the instrument: the higher the body the longer the fade-out. If you want an extra long sustain, a high surdo is the right choice, but even a lower surdo has enough sustain. So if you wish to have full resonance, pick a high shell. If you prefer taping your surdo head, you don´t need to worry about sustain anyways.

Weight

The height of the shell has of course an immense influence on the total weight of the drum. The difference is approx. 1 kg depending on diameter and manufacturer.

Wearing comfort

If you are using a shoulder strap with one hook, a surdo with a high shell will have a comfortable position in front of your body. The low balance point contributes to the surdo´s stable position without it being too tilted. Short shells are comfy to wear in front of you with a hip strap and easy to play with 2 beaters without the surdo banging against your legs.

Surdos are available in the sizes 14” to 29”. In general one can say that small diameters are suitable for high tuning whereas large diameters are better for deeper bass tones. The most common sizes are 18”, 20” and 22”. Smaller drums (14” and 16”) are suitable for children and youngsters or or Mangueira´s speciality - the Surdo Mor (16''). A 24” surdo sounds fantastic in the deep tones, so if you are able to handle the weight, this surdo would be an excellent option. 26''or 29'' surdos sound great but are only for 'big boys and girls' since they seem to weigh tons, especially when you have to carry them!

Wooden shells create warm and full tones whereas aluminium shells sound sharper and have much more overtones. The choice of the head has more influence on the drum´s sound than the material of the shell. Surdos made of aluminium are more rustical and ideal for playing in a samba band.Wooden surdos are great for Pagode, rhythmical therapy or studio work. In Brazilian blocos and Samba schools you will almost exclusively find

The choice of the right head is essential for the sound of your surdo:

Goat skin heads provide a full and warm sound with a long sustain. They are used as batter- and resonance heads in the Samba schools. For natural surdo heads, exclusively goat skin is used.

Nylon/synthetic heads sound sharp and singing and are rather rich in overtones. Their sound is occasionally regarded as too thin, but within the context of a samba band this tone is needed especially for the high surdo voices.

Korino / napa heads are double layered heads with a white nylon bottom and (mostly black) synthetic leather top. They create a typical deep and full sound with hardly any overtones and very short sustain. This head is not really suitable for the high surdo voices and should not be played on too many surdos in a band either as the sound pattern tends to get too muffled.

Surdo RIO 22''x50cm Hide heads
Izzo

Average rating of 0 out of 5 stars

Surdo RIO 22''x50cm Hide heads
Surdo 22" x 50 cm - hide heads with aluminium rim on both sidesOriginal Rio Style Samba surdo - authentic Rio style sound! The RIO line surdos with its 50 cm shells are shorter than the former 60 cm standard. This reduces weight, doesn't particularly affect the sound in any way and, conveniently, shorter surdos are also easier to handle, to store, to transport - and they're lighter - yay! 50 cm surdos can be seen more and more often in Rio's Samba schools.Tips for happy surdos:Natural skins sound best with the right mallets (hard, unpadded).Tune slowly, especially at the beginning! You may need to retune while playing, this works best if you play with the nuts pointing up and use a crank tuning key.Always loosen the skins after playing. When storing in dry air or during hot-temperature periods, check the skins and loosen them if necessary, as they can tighten considerably.Important note for mounting hide heads:During production, natural skins are mounted damp on a wooden or aluminium ring. When drying, the skins contract, which often causes the ring to warp. If you mount a new skin on your surdo, it will usually be necessary to moisten the skin with a sponge or cloth (not soaking wet, just damp!) so that it stretches again and can be mounted easily. Put the skin on without applying tension and leave it to dry overnight, ideally and without any aids, so that it can adapt to the shape of your surdo. This will prevent it from becoming brittle and you will be able to enjoy your instrument for a long time.

Surdo light 18'' x 50cm - aluminium - HW black

Surdo light 18'' x 50cm - aluminium - HW black
Surdo light, practical 50cm intermediate size for all styles 18'' x 50cm, aluminium - black hardwareBe kind to your back - get a lightweight surdo! A half-height surdo 10cm shorter than the 60cm standard surdos - how would you even notice that? Believe us - you will. Sound-wise, there won't be much of difference. For Samba de Enredo fans, a few hundred grams are often a great relief, especially if you are out walking long parades or putting in long rehearsal hours. And maybe the surdo will now fit better in your car or the storage in your rehearsal space Not to mention how just a little less weight will feel when you got your surdo in a bag on your back riding a bike to rehearsal. Besides, you will thank the god of Samba no later than at your next 4-hour carnival parade for not carrying the same 6kg steel sheet model your band mate has.The light line surdos from Gope are built with lightweight hardware components and thin aluminium sheet. Musically speaking, you could also call them compact surdos. Once you have tried them, you will never let them go again. The design principle is quite clear: save weight without sacrificing sound. If you do a lot of parades, dance choreographies or if you simply don't like to carry a heavy surdo, then an intermediate size model is a worthwhile idea. The lugs, the rim and flat rim elements are all of lightweight construction, the tension hoops are slim and light. The shell is welded at the seam, which gives the body a higher vibration component in the sound, as the shell is not interrupted by a folded seam.Tip:Gope surdos come with thin P2 heads from the factory. Especially for larger sizes or if you don't like overtones, we recommend getting a thicker superior head to play on (P3 or any double-layered). Take your time when tuning and breaking the drum in, so that the heads can stretch well and settle on the rim of the shell. This way you will get the best sound out of your surdo.

Surdo Light, Dobra 16'' x 45 cm, AluminiumOur lightest surdo line for Samba Reggae and Afro-Samba!The compact 16'' size is perfect also for kids or young sambistas who need a lighter instrument. Gope's Light Surdos are made from specially selected lightweight materials, making them not only lighter but also easier to handle - perfect for dynamic performances. This surdo is ideal for groups that include lot's of dance and choreography in their performances, for those who play their surdo above their head, or simply for sambistas who prefer to travel light. All components, such as brackets, rims and metal construction elements, are designed with lightweight construction. The slimmer elementns further reduce the weight, while the welded shell delivers a full, resonant sound. Compared to folded seams, the welded seam enhances the shell's vibration properties, resulting in a richer tone with more shell resonance.Despite its delicate design, this surdo holds its own against heavier models. While less weight can sometimes mean less durability, our years of experience have proven this design to be both reliable and robust.

Surdo Light 22''x40cm
Surdo light Fundo 22''x40cm aluminium HW chromed Our lightest Samba Reggae surdos from Gope!Ultra-short shell, crispy, authentic Bahia sound for fat bass sound on street parades or stage gigs. Gope welds its seams instead of folding or riveting them, so the sound can swing even better and unfold more shell-based sound. Lightweight components make this surdo an absolute favourite - minimal weight with high stability and big time bass. The compact Surdo is especially suitable for surdo players who have overhead choreographies, who lift up the surdo with one hand and do a lot of show dancing. But also those who don't want to carry heavy - young samba players or candidates with back problems - will love this model. Once hooked, you'll never want to play a different surdo. The Light line doesn't have quite as much volume as models with thick and heavy shells, but here the emphasis is clearly on the 'extra light'. With thick heads you can add a lot of quality to the Light line surdos. The construction principle is simple: save weight, big sound and a stable, versatile street and stage instrument. This model has a chromed rim. Our tip for big bass:Replace the ex-factory drumhead with a thicker one, e.g. a GP3, a hydraulic head, a double-ply or an inverted korino head. Thicker skins vibrate less, thicken the attack and bring more sound mass into mix.For the high voices the thin ex-factory head might be just the right head. It can be tuned to exactly the right level with partial masking, damper gel pads or foam rings.

Surdo 20" x 50 cm - hide heads with aluminium ring on both sidesOriginal Rio Style Samba surdo - authentic Rio style sound!

Surdo with legset 18''x60cm Hide heads
Gope

Average rating of 0 out of 5 stars

Surdo with legset 18''x60cm Hide heads
Beautiful Samba Pagode wood surdo 18'' x 60cm with legsetWood surdos generally have a warmer, more haptical sound. Other than the sharp sound of aluminium shells which is to all intents and purposes for street Samba, musicians and lovers of Samba de Mesa - the indoor Samba version with more wood and hide head instruments - usually prefer instruments with warmer sound qualities which they find with wood shells. Gope has created quite a beauty with this surdo, the shell is solid and well made from laminated wood, the batter head is a hide head with aluminium rim, the resonance head is a thin nylon head. The legset can be mounted for gigs or taken off easy and quick for transportation.Weight:without legset: 6,8 kgwiith legset: 8,1 kgTip:For even better sound quality and stability on stage, we recommend to add the surdo feet shock absorbers (art.nr. A601200) which you can simply slip on the feet of the legset.

Surdo Light 22''x45cm black
Surdo Light Fundo 22'' x 45 cm, aluminiumXL bass for your bloco! 22" fundos for full-bodied Samba Reggae beats! Our lightest surdo line for Samba Reggae and Afro-Samba!For sambistas who want a lighter instrument. Gope's Light Surdos are made from specially selected lightweight materials, making them not only lighter but also easier to handle - perfect for dynamic performances. Once you’ve played one, you won’t want to change brand ever again! The concept? Reduce weight without compromising quality!

Timbal 14''x90cm red

Timbal 14''x90cm red
14'' x 90 cm timbal with 16 high-tension hooks, aluminium shellCrisp tuning, clear and smacky slaps, powerful open tones, rich basses – this model from the top brand Timbra with 16 hooks can withstand the highest tuning! Many Axé Pop bands, Samba Reggae blocos and also Samba schools in Rio have been following the trend of tuning timbals extremely high for quite some years. In order to better distribute the high forces that occur when tuning high and to avoid overloading the shell, the tension is distributed to the shell by using more hooks. An additional reinforcing ring helps to balance the pressure. The shell is built for tunings that would not be possible with a traditional timbal. Very well made instrument.More material, like tension hooks and reinforcing elements, naturally adds some weight. But once the timbal is on the stand on stage, the extra weight is no longer an issue – every gram is worth it for the sound! And with a good strap, you can still carry it comfortably as usual.A true visual standout and a tonal masterpiece, robust and high-quality, crafted in the authentic Bahian style – this timbal fits perfectly into diverse musical worlds, from Samba Reggae blocos and Rio style batucadas to Brazilian, jazz, pop, or world music bands.

Timbal 14''x90cm green
