Timbal - product guide

Timbals are available in various sizes. In order to find out which timbal is the right one for you, have a look at a couple of aspects: If you like a strong bass sound, you should choose a timbal with a diameter of at least 13" or 14". The typical-sounding open tones and sharp slaps are also easier to play on a larger diameter. We therefore recommend to choose your timbal as large as possible! A height of 70cm is suitable for players up to 1,68m, if you are taller, you should get a timbal with 90 cm height. Take a look where you like playing the timbal - at the height of your hips or lower.

Weight, sound and appearance is what we´re looking at here. The weight of each instrument differs depending on the manufacturers and the used materials but in general you can say: Aluminium timbals weigh less than wooden timbals and are more suitable for resisting the stronger force effect due to high pitching. The sound of aluminium timbals is sharp and dirty. Wooden timbals have softer overtones and less sustain. Aluminium timbals come with shiny or with brushed surfaces. Wooden timbals are offered by various brands in either natural look or painted in different colours.

Most timbals are equipped with a rounded so-called comfort rim. If your playing technique is advanced, you can also try a simple rounded 4-6 mm steel rim, though this one is not adecuate for hich pitching.

As an answer to the trend of pitching timbals as high as technically possible, some companies have developed a tension system with 16 hooks. The effect is as simple as ingenious: When tuning the timbal up high, the force is spread equally onto the shell, which is how such a high pitching is possible in the first place.

The band is surrounded by a strong social network which has been facilitating education for women and children for many years. The hooks spread the pression equally on the shell of the drum, like this your shell will not suffer any damage, even with the highest tuning. Nice, deep bass sound and crispy slaps are a nice to have with aluminium instruments, the whole sound has the typical sharp note. Aluminium instruments are pretty easy to maintain, weather doesn't harm them much and they are robust. The seam of the body is welded. Welded shells produce a higher and more audible part of shell sound due to more constant vibration, Gope welds all its instruments. The diametre is a standard 14'' - same as the high timbals, only that the body is shorter. The Contemporanea PRO series builds with thick-walled aluminium giving their instruments a full and voluminous sound. 16 hooks and the specially designed timbal head make this timbal super attractive and also allow the the typical extra-high Bahia style pitching without any efforts. Aluminium timbals sound sharper than wooden timbals. If you play many outdoor gigs with your bloco, you'll find the sound of this aluminium timbal easier to recognise as it is more present. If it rains much where you live, no more worries about your instrument as aluminium timbals are really easy to maintain and they don't give much about humidity. Keep in mind that 16 tension hooks mean a lot of hardware, you will notice this in the weight of the instrument, even though this 80cm version already saves you almost 1 kg compared to the 90cm / 16 hook model. If you plan to walk many street parades, you might be better off with a lighter model. The polished aluminium is definitively an eye-catcher, and the chromed comfort rim protects your hands.
