Until the end of the 1980's, the timbal was merely a small, inconspicuous instrument accompaning Samba sessions. Thanks to Bahia's Samba Reggae Popstar Carlinhos Brown and his fellow musicians, the timbal developped in a different direction: the guys had the idea to strap timbals around their shoulders like djembes and call their band 'Timbalada'! This brilliant idea made the timbal famous all over the world! The sound of the timbal with its clear and concise high tones and its strong bass is a reminiscent of the West-African djembe.
