DEAL | Surdo Axé 20''x40cm
Surdo Axé 20‘’ x 40 cm - nylon heads on both sides for fat beats!20'' surdo with short shell and crisp bass! This surdo axé with 40cm aluminium shell from Timbra is a short and light surdo made of medium- thickness aluminium with a powerful sound. Timbra is a show brand that builds Samba instruments for both stage performances and blocos, combining sturdy components, well designed hardware and a powerful sound. This model was specially developed for Kalango as it is a lighter version of the stage model with less hardware. It is perfect for use in blocos. Strong sound and solid construction, good and sturdy head supports on the shell rims and classic hardware with a fairly light weight. The short shell has its origins in Bahia, where surdos are traditionally used for dancing a lot of choreographies and where they are even played high above the head. A shorter shell saves weight and is easier to handle. The short shell also means that the sustain is shorter (= dry sound), which is exactly what you should be looking for in Bahia styles.

DEAL | Timbal aluminium 14''x80cm
Izzo

Average rating of 0 out of 5 stars

DEAL | Timbal aluminium 14''x80cm
Timbal 14‘’ x 80 cm - aluminium with 16 tension rods - crisp street timbal sound in a compact intermediate sizeThe perfect intermediate size between the 90cm standard timbal and the short 70cm timbal. This 80cm timbal is the ideal size for you if you are looking for a compact timbal without having to compromise on sound. The diameter is 14‘’, the same as the taller 90cm timbals, only the shell is slightly shorter. In contrast to wooden timbals, aluminium always sounds a little sharper and punchier. Timbals with 16 tension rods can be tuned really high, the high number of hooks distribute the forces evenly across the shell. Rich and crisp slaps, powerful open tones and full basses characterise this compact instrument. With an aluminium shell, you don't have to worry about rainy weather, even during a carnival parade. Many Axé pop bands as well as traditional blocos have been following the trend of tuning timbals extremely high for years now. More tension hooks transfer the high forces generated when pitching the instrument very high to the shell. This invention paved the way for this trend: The shell is built for extremely high tunings that could not be reached with a more traditional timbal.More material (tension hooks, reinforcing elements) naturally also adds weight, but at 80cm you save a few grams thanks to the shorter shell.Crisp, high sound, robust and stylish to play in a variety of styles.

DEAL | Zabumba aluminium 18''x20cm
Izzo

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

DEAL | Zabumba aluminium 18''x20cm
18'' aluminium zabumba for authentic Forró and a north-east-Brazilian dance night outThe zabumba is the heartbeat of any Forró-, Baião-, Xote- or Xaxado ensemble. Just like the surdo in Samba it plays the base and provides the pulse with its pushy rhythms and makes you wanting to jump up and dance with its syncopated beats. The playing technique is a little different: the upper head - which is fitted with a nylon head for a stronger attack - is played with a short, padded mallet, whilst the resonance head is played with a thin whip creating the typical contrast with contra rhythms. A good zabumba player knows how to make you dance even if you are not much of dancer. Always on his side - the triangle, the accordion and a singer. An 18'' zabumba is a great medium size and offers plenty of possibilities within an ensemble.Izzo produces well-made, solid and high-quality instruments at fair and affordable prices. What are you waiting for - grab your dance shoes or your za-bum-ba!

Alfaia - bombo de Maracatu: pure, simple design, hide heads on aluminium rings for easy mount and head exchange Strong, laminated tension hoops hold the hide heads on the wood shell of the bombo which is also made of laminated wood. The shells are unpainted but treated with clear varnish, the simple design leaves all the attention to the craft work and the wood-optic. The alfaias are very light! Good quality, stable nylon ropes are used for the tuning system. Another pro for this series is the hide heads on aluminium rims. Other than hide heads on wood rims, these won't twist out of shape as much and make every head changing quick and easy.

Atabaque Capoeira 75cm
Mestre Negao

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Atabaque Capoeira 75cm
Traditional atabaque de Capoeira 75 cm with rope tuning Beautiful, hand worked unique pieces made of solid wood planks and sisal ropes. Atabaques are Brazilian hand drums with a rich tradition and African roots. In Brazil atabques are played in Capoeira and ritual Candomblê music. The rope tuning system is especially popular amongst capoeiristas. You can tune the drum by knocking in or loosening the wooden wedges held by a metal hoop. The body is built in traditional barrel style and is boardered by several iron hoops on different levels. The atabaques are made one by one, very nice quality and solid artinsan work by Mestre Negão who manufactures them in his small workshop in São Paulo. Mestre Negão is Capoeirista and instrument builder making exceptional skills. In no more than a small room of his house he creates a lovely selection of beautiful instruments. The atabaques have hand picked, partly shaven skins, solid bodies and a wooden stand with rubber edge that goes with the drum.Dimensions:Instrument height without stand: approx. 75cmInstrument height with stand: approx. 94cmDiameter of head: approx. 9,5''Due to all instruments of this series being artisanally manufactured, some small deviations may occur._____Resetting Atabaque Rings – A Quick GuideTemperature and humidity fluctuations (e.g., indoor heating in winter) can cause the wood to shrink, loosening the rings on your atabaque – this is normal and easy to fix.How to reset the rings:✔ Tools: A flat old file or a piece of hard wood (e.g., oak) and a small hammer.✔ Technique: Work from top to bottom (from the smaller towards the larger diameter), positioning the tool at a fairly vertical angle, almost parallel to the atabaque’s body, to avoid damage. Tap the ring evenly all around. Do not force or tilt too much – the ring should remain parallel to the ground. The better the contact with the body, the more stable the tension. Why is this necessary?Resetting rings is a traditional technique from barrel-making – just like old beer or wine barrels, where metal rings need to be tapped back into place when the wood dries.Gaps between the staves? If the Atabaque shrinks and the rings come loose, tension is lost, causing gaps between the staves. Resetting the rings restores stability and keeps the body together.

Timbal 14''x90cm blue bike
14'' x 90 cm timbal with 16 high-tension hooks, aluminium shellCrisp tuning, clear and smacky slaps, powerful open tones, rich basses – this model from the top brand Timbra with 16 hooks can withstand the highest tuning! Many Axé Pop bands, Samba Reggae blocos and also Samba schools in Rio have been following the trend of tuning timbals extremely high for quite some years. In order to better distribute the high forces that occur when tuning high and to avoid overloading the shell, the tension is distributed to the shell by using more hooks. An additional reinforcing ring helps to balance the pressure. The shell is built for tunings that would not be possible with a traditional timbal. Very well made instrument.More material, like tension hooks and reinforcing elements, naturally adds some weight. But once the timbal is on the stand on stage, the extra weight is no longer an issue – every gram is worth it for the sound! And with a good strap, you can still carry it comfortably as usual.A true visual standout and a tonal masterpiece, robust and high-quality, crafted in the authentic Bahian style – this timbal fits perfectly into diverse musical worlds, from Samba Reggae blocos and Rio style batucadas to Brazilian, jazz, pop, or world music bands.

Timbal 14''x90cm blue bike
Timbra

Average rating of 0 out of 5 stars

They can be pressed together to produce the characteristic click sound with little effort. Each bell also has 2 small muffling stickers on the inside to prevent lingering reverberation and unwanted overtones.Good-sounding agogô with a nice interval.A stick is included.Good to know:In Brazil, it is not common to tune agogos to certain tones or the same pitch; dissonance and individuality are quite normal and actually favoured.

General information about KALANGO
Who is Kalango?

Kalango was launched in 2002 by Thomas Mueller-Stoy and Klaus Urban, who are both active musicians in the European Samba scene. Now, we are a small team located in the south of Germany, Kalango is an online shop specialised in Brazilian Instruments. Decades of musical experience as musicians and a profound knowledge of percussion instruments are the lifeblood of the company. Numerous journeys to Brazil have inspired the companie's range of percussion and string instruments and samba accessories.

No. We want to concentrate on giving great service through our online-shop. Running a retail shop is not our concept. You might meet us at some Samba festivals like usually the Coburg Samba Festival each July in Germany, check our Blog and Facebook Site for details where and when we are around and drop past to meet us personally!

All Kalango instruments and accessories are new goods. Usually manufacturers and wholesalers deliver the instruments to us in their original packaging. An exception to this can be instruments which are hand-crafted in small workshops which we then carefully package for transport ourselves. Articles with minor and mainly optical defects or slight traces of use which don´t impair the use of the instrument in any way are marked as B-stock and are sold exclusively as such. For more details, please see below more information about B-stock articles.

We buy most of our products directly from the producers in Brazil. We are in regular contact with all manufacturers which enables us to get actively involved in product improvement and development.

Our website is our complete catalogue. All the products you see on our site marked as "in stock" are available for ordering. A few products are available for backordering, we will order them only when they are bought through our webshop.
