Beautiful Samba Pagode wood surdo 18'' x 60cm with legset
Wood surdos generally have a warmer, more haptical sound. Other than the sharp sound of aluminium shells which is to all intents and purposes for street Samba, musicians and lovers of Samba de Mesa - the indoor Samba version with more wood and hide head instruments - usually prefer instruments with warmer sound qualities which they find with wood shells. Gope has created quite a beauty with this surdo, the shell is solid and well made from laminated wood, the batter head is a hide head with aluminium rim, the resonance head is a thin nylon head. The legset can be mounted for gigs or taken off easy and quick for transportation.

GOPE is a family-run business from the area around São Paulo. Today the company is being run in its third generation by the grand daughter of the firm´s founder.
The brand GOPE has been producing drums and smallpercussion instruments for over 50 years now. When the company was founded, there was already a small workshop in which drumsets were manufactured.
In 1962, the production of the typical Samba instruments began, iniciated by Humberto Rodella, the son of the founder. The company kept growing and after several relocations in São Paulo, GOPE finally found the right place for building a large production hall in Embu Guaçu, a suburb of São Paulo.
Since then GOPE produces in Embu Guaçu everything from the Agogô to the Zabumba, a wide range of percussion instruments, and only recently also various wind instruments.
GOPE has always kept in close touch with the musicians. The ideas and proposals for modifications that they received from many of those contacts, have always had much influence in the development of new instruments and improvement of production.

Ich kaufte die Surdo und benutzte sie nur dreimal. Beim ersten Mal fiel mir mitten im Samba-Kreis, an dem ich teilnahm, der Fuß einfach ab, und auch bei den anderen beiden Shows fiel sie aus dem Nichts herunter. Gestern habe ich mich wieder daran gemacht, die Surdo zu quetschen, weil ich das Wochenende in Dresden spielen muss, und habe gesehen, dass das Holz auf einer Seite anfängt zu reißen. Ich glaube, es liegt ein Herstellungsfehler vor
